WNBA's Cathy Engelbert says a search firm is vetting candidates to replace her
The search firm has begun contacting candidates as Engelbert says the next commissioner must keep the league’s growth and relationships on track.
On Saturday, Oct. 17, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said her successor needs "thick skin" while a search firm vets candidates to replace her following her announced retirement.
Engelbert's seven-year tenure transformed the WNBA into a growing business, though her leadership faced scrutiny over strained player relations and controversies surrounding officiating and the transgender debate.
The league office expanded staff from 12 to nearly 100 employees during her tenure, while Engelbert also negotiated an 11-year, $3.1 billion media rights agreement.
Engelbert met with search firm Excel Search & Advisory, submitting several candidates for the "multidimensional" role to facilitate succession planning.
The WNBA remains on track to launch a centralized replay system by the 2027 season and expand from 12 to 15 teams within four years.
