The EU has agreed on a protective regime for its own steel sector, which will now negotiate an import quota with Switzerland. This will depend on the already weakened steel sector, otherwise it will end.
The European steel industry has to contend with much more favourable competition from Asia. Import quotas are to help - and will become even smaller in the future.
In order to protect the European steel industry, the European Union is strengthening its import rules.
