With playoff run ended, Frost face the reality of PWHL expansion
The PWHL’s expansion and a free-agent class of more than 120 players could leave Minnesota with a much different roster next season.
The Minnesota Frost face a franchise-changing makeover with 16 players hitting the open free-agent market at season's end, including star players Taylor Heise, Kendall Coyne Schofield, Lee Stecklein, Grace Zumwinkle, and Kelly Pannek.
Following a 2-1 loss to Montreal last week, Minnesota will watch the Walter Cup final series instead of playing in it, marking a first for the two-time PWHL champions.
Frost general manager Melissa Caruso said Thursday, "We acknowledge that talent needs to be dispersed now," while head coach Ken Klee noted the team prepares for significant change.
Expansion franchises in Detroit, Las Vegas and Hamilton, Ontario, will target an enormous free agent class of over 120 players, each offering a "franchise offer" to one signee.
The Lake City native Heise, who spent all three seasons with The Frost, said "We know last year, we lost a few really, really good people," hoping teammates cherish remaining time together.
