What to Know About Shawn Eichorst, Wisconsin Badgers' Reported AD Target
Shawn Eichorst would replace Chris McIntosh after Wisconsin narrowed its search for a new athletic director, with the vacancy open since April.
According to ESPN, the University of Wisconsin is targeting Shawn Eichorst, current deputy athletic director at the University of Texas at Austin, as its next athletic director. Eichorst previously served as athletic director at Nebraska and Miami.
Eichorst has deep ties to the state, having grown up in Lone Rock about 45 miles west of Madison and graduated from UW-Whitewater. He worked as deputy athletic director at Wisconsin under Barry Alvarez, former athletic director, for five years from 2006 to 2011.
Following the April resignation of former athletic director Chris McIntosh, a nine-person committee working with interim chancellor Eric Wilcots and search firm CSA Search and Consulting is managing the search. Deputy athletic director Marcus Sedberry currently serves as interim director.
During his tenure at Nebraska, Eichorst faced scrutiny for hiring football coach Mike Riley, who compiled a 19-19 record in three seasons. His appointment of basketball coach Jim Larranaga at Miami proved successful, and he hired women's basketball coach Amy Williams, the 2018 Big Ten Coach of the Year.
Wisconsin fans hoping for a clean break from the Alvarez era may view Eichorst's deep institutional connections with skepticism. McIntosh's recent departure to take a deputy commissioner role with the Big Ten underscores the committee's challenge in balancing continuity with fresh direction.
