WIRED Investigation Finds Deepfake Nudes Crisis Hit Nearly 90 Schools
The district says the report was quickly sent to police as families of students thought to be involved were contacted and school consequences were issued.
On Feb 26, Lake Zurich High School administrators notified the Lake Zurich Police Department after discovering students used AI to generate pornographic images of classmates. The case remains an active criminal investigation.
Superintendent Kelley Gallt called the incident "disturbing," describing it as a "fundamental violation" of school values. Students allegedly used readily accessible AI tools to create explicit content depicting classmates.
Cyber crime expert Richard Wistocki, a member of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, warned that students face severe consequences. "If it looks like a child and the child is naked, that is child pornography," Wistocki said, noting potential sex offender registration.
Lake Zurich Community Unit School District 95 issued school-based consequences to students involved, though the active investigation limits public disclosure of details. Families expressed concern about the district's communication and impact on the learning environment.
Schools and legislators must prioritize proactive education and updated policies to address AI-generated abuse before incidents multiply. "Education is the best way to address it," said researcher Shatz, "because you want to be preventing these situations, rather than reacting to them when they happen.
