Windows 10 Security Updates Will End on Tuesday, but You Still Have This Option
Nearly half of Windows PCs still run Windows 10, which will no longer receive free security updates after October 14, increasing vulnerability to cyber threats.
- On Oct. 14, 2025, Microsoft will end support for Windows 10, stopping free security updates for millions of devices unless enrolled in the Extended Security Updates programme.
- Microsoft's 10-year policy explains the timing, as Windows 10 released in 2015 reaches its end in 2025 while Windows 11's TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and newer-generation CPUs slow upgrades.
- ZDNET noted the three-year ESU cost totals $427, with Extended Security Updates offered on a subscription basis for up to three years and business pricing starting at $61 for the first year.
- With free updates ending, unsupported Windows 10 users face increased risks from malware and scams including fake pop-ups and calls, and Avast urges users and organisations to review security.
- If eligible, upgrade to Windows 11 to maintain security, but Microsoft will block upgrades through Windows Update for incompatible PCs, affecting nearly half of Windows PCs and forcing administrators to consider five options soon.
