Destructive Bald Range Wildfire Now Under Control
Crews are mopping up the 25,163-hectare blaze and helping residents return after most evacuation orders were lifted, BC Wildfire Service said.
- On Monday night, the BC Wildfire Service announced the 25,163.2-hectare Bald Range wildfire near Summerland is under control, 25 days after it ignited and forced evacuation of the entire community.
- The fire, which started 15 kilometres west of town on Aug. 7, destroyed 40 structures in Summerland and another 110 in Electoral Area F, including the Faulder and Meadow Valley areas.
- Mayor Doug Holmes praised local crews, stating they "displayed incredible courage, confidence and calmness" while facing a wall of flame stretching six kilometres that threatened the town.
- Opening at Giant's Head School on Tuesday, Sept. 1, the Bald Range Wildfire Recovery Centre will provide support for displaced residents, with re-entry packages available at the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen office.
- Although the blaze is under control, BC Wildfire Service crews continue mop-up operations as dry fuels and ongoing drought conditions persist, though a weather system arriving Tuesday afternoon may bring scattered showers.
