Wildfire numbers soar past 100, dozens out of control, as lightning hits B.C.'s south

Active wildfires in British Columbia have nearly tripled since mid-week due to hot, dry weather and lightning, with about 80% caused by lightning strikes, officials said.

  • On Aug. 30, 2025, the British Columbia Wildfire Service reported about 140 wildfires across the province on Saturday, up from 68 on Wednesday after thunderstorms and lightning.
  • Hot, dry conditions meant forest fuels were highly susceptible to ignition amid thunderstorms and nearly 4,400 lightning strikes hit the Cariboo and Coastal regions on Friday and Saturday; the service says about 70–80 per cent of active fires started from lightning.
  • The Cariboo Regional District ordered evacuation for over 62 square kilometres near Tsetzi Lake, directing residents to Prince George; the Tsetzi Lake fire has grown to nearly 10 square kilometres since last Wednesday.
  • BC Wildfire Service figures showed nearly 90 active blazes on Friday, with about two dozen out of control; by Sunday, about 35 per cent were burning out of control and lightning is expected to diminish.
  • Scattered rain could still bring new lightning sparking fires in the eastern Cariboo region, Pemberton Zone, and Manning Park, while the southern half of B.C. faces more strikes and the coast may see precipitation.
