Hyderabad: Retired IPS Officer’s Wife Tied up, Suffocated to Death During Robbery at Jubilee Hills Home

Police said a 2 a.m. break-in may have involved a domestic help and a Nepal-based gang, and investigators are tracing suspects and missing items.

  • On Friday, May 8, 2026, 55-year-old Tanuja Ranjan, wife of former IPS officer Vinay Ranjan, was found dead at their residence in Prashasan Nagar, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad.
  • Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar suspects a Nepali gang committed the robbery, with Kalpana, a recently hired live-in help, allegedly assisting entry at around 2 a.m.
  • While former IPS officer Vinay Ranjan was away on a two-day tour, family members sleeping on the third floor remained unaware until morning. The victim was allegedly gagged and tied up, causing death by suffocation.
  • Police have launched a statewide manhunt, alerting neighboring states including Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, which share a border with Nepal. Telangana DGP C V Anand visited the crime scene.
  • Commissioner Sajjanar urged the public to exercise caution while hiring domestic workers and stressed proper background verification. Prashasan Nagar, home to many VIPs, is considered one of the city's most protected residential areas.
