Why you just got a $90 Social Security check — and why 40 million seniors didn't
The one-time rebate is funded by the Medicare Improvement Fund and will go to more than 20 million eligible Part B enrollees, officials said.
On Friday, President Trump announced the administration is sending $90 payments to more than 20 million Medicare Part B enrollees, with deposits from the Social Security Administration arriving in bank accounts this week.
The payments are funded by the Medicare Improvement Fund, established by Congress to support original Medicare programs, with the White House stating the initiative aims to make coverage more affordable for beneficiaries.
Eligible seniors must be enrolled in traditional Medicare and not receive Medicaid assistance or pay income-related premiums; about 40 million enrollees do not qualify for the one-time payment. Beneficiaries can call 1-800-MEDICARE to verify eligibility.
The initiative comes ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections, though Juliette Cubanski, vice president and director of the Program on Medicare Policy at KFF, noted the $90 payment may not fully offset rising healthcare costs.
Trump has also promised to send every American adult $5,000 if Republicans retain control of Congress, a pledge estimated to cost more than $1 trillion. Polls show only 17% of Americans approve of his handling of inflation.
