Why Mets are sending Jonah Tong back down to Triple-A despite 3.60 ERA
Joey Gerber gives New York a fresh bullpen arm after six pitchers were used in Monday’s extra-inning loss, officials said.
The New York Mets optioned right-hander Jonah Tong to Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday, recalling righty Joey Gerber to bolster their bullpen before their series finale against the Seattle Mariners.
Manager Carlos Mendoza needed a fresh arm after using six pitchers in Monday's 3-2 extra-inning loss and four in Tuesday's game, as Tong allowed four earned runs in 3.1 innings.
"We need to see consistency with him throwing strikes," Mendoza said Wednesday, noting command issues for the 22-year-old ranked 35th in MLB Pipeline who must spend at least 15 days in the minors.
Senga is scheduled to throw 85 pitches in a rehab start today, positioning him to rejoin the rotation next week alongside locked starters Freddy Peralta, Nolan McLean, and Christian Scott.
With a pair of off days sandwiching an upcoming series against San Diego, the Mets won't need a fifth starter until late next week; management could consider David Peterson or Zach Thornton for bulk relief roles.
