'Why are you doing this to me?' Woman accused of stalking the McCanns has outburst in court
Kate McCann described increasing stress and anxiety caused by repeated false claims from Julia Wandelt, who stalked the family and insisted she was their missing daughter Madeleine.
- At Leicester Crown Court, Kate McCann described how two women confronted her on the driveway of her Rothley home on December 7 last year, leaving her distressed.
- From June 2022, investigators say Julia Wandelt repeatedly claimed to be Madeleine, and Ms McCann called police after Wandelt messaged Amelie McCann, the McCanns' daughter, calling it "the final straw".
- Kate McCann described the emotional impact, saying `I felt quite distressed to be honest` and `invaded in her own home` after police showed a photo and voicemail recordings.
- Earlier this year, Ms Wandelt and Mrs Spragg were arrested on February 19, both denying one stalking charge, with Wandelt detained at Bristol Airport.
- The McCanns said false claims harm the Madeleine McCann case, while Metropolitan Police inquiries in Poland reassured them Ms Wandelt was not Madeleine. Gerry McCann said, `We don't know what happened to Madeleine; there's no evidence she's dead` and they still hope she is alive.
