WHO declares end of Indonesia’s poliovirus outbreak following yearslong vaccination campaign
Nearly 60 million polio vaccine doses were given during a three-year campaign after low immunization and misinformation triggered the outbreak in multiple Indonesian provinces.
- On Friday, the World Health Organization declared Indonesia's polio outbreak officially over after nearly three years of intensive response efforts, Indonesian officials reported from Jakarta.
- The outbreak began in Aceh after efforts were hampered by disinformation about vaccines and only 50.9% of infants received polio vaccination in 2021.
- Using novel oral polio vaccine type 2 and nearly 60 million doses, authorities conducted two nationwide immunization rounds, improved routine coverage, and introduced a hexavalent vaccine, officials said.
- The last confirmed case was in South Papua province in June 2024, and no poliovirus has been detected by children and environmental surveillance systems since then.
- WHO's regional director urged vigilance, calling the achievement a critical step toward global eradication and urging all 38 countries and areas to remain vigilant.
