Pope Hats, Bloody Shirts and so Many Bobbleheads: The Creative Ways MLB Teams Lure Fans to the Park
All fans will get a Pope hat as the White Sox add on-field tributes, music and ceremonial moments for Chicago native Pope Leo XIV.
- On Tuesday, Aug. 11, the Chicago White Sox distributed pope hats to all 40,615 fans at Rate Field to honor Pope Leo XIV, a Chicago native and the team's most famous supporter.
- Marketing director Mike Downey conceived the event in April after Leo was named pontiff, drawing inspiration from the pope's lifelong allegiance to the South Side team.
- The initial 2,500-hat promotion expanded to all attendees after overwhelming demand, while Chicago White Sox Charities donated $14,000 to the Midwest Augustinian Province, the religious order Leo belonged to during his Chicago years.
- Festivities featured legendary organist Nancy Faust performing during the game, Sister Mary Jo Sobieck throwing the ceremonial first pitch, and the ChiTown Popes providing entertainment at Gate 4 Stage.
- The evening eclipsed the actual game against the Cincinnati Reds—a rematch of the 1919 World Series—and stands as the White Sox's most successful promotion since the 1979 Disco Demolition Night.
