White House says Nobel Committee puts 'politics over peace'
Maria Corina Machado won for her fight for democracy in Venezuela while the White House criticized the decision as politicized, despite Trump's role in multiple peace deals, officials said.
- On Friday, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced Maria Corina Machado as the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize winner, selecting her from 338 nominees.
- Known for more than two decades of activism, Machado has spent over two decades advocating democratic rights and was disqualified from the 2023 presidential primaries by the Venezuelan government.
- 841 people are currently imprisoned in Venezuela, and Machado told Euronews, `We are in a situation of maximum persecution, and practically all the leaders that had to do with the organisation of the elections are currently either in hiding, exiled, or refugeed abroad, or detained`.
- President Donald Trump was denied the prize despite being credited with ending seven wars, and White House communications director Steven Cheung accused the Nobel committee of placing politics over peace.
- The prize includes eleven million Swedish kronor , and Jorgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Nobel Peace Prize committee, said the panel seeks to shut out public lobbying.
