White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia Didn’t Pass Bar Exam
A watchdog complaint says she falsely claimed to be a lawyer, and records show no evidence she passed the California bar exam.
On Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia made her debut alongside President Donald Trump, speaking for under 15 minutes at the White House.
A nonprofit organization filed a complaint with the State Bar of California on Wednesday, alleging Zacharia falsely claimed to be a licensed attorney in multiple professional contexts.
Critics question whether Zacharia obtained a license despite her 2011 degree from the Pepperdine Caruso School of Law; when asked about bar admission, she claimed she passed the exam "when I moved to China."
Zacharia claims she served a three-year stint at the Zhong Lun Law Firm in Beijing; however, the National Unified Legal Professional Qualification Examination is typically restricted to Chinese citizens.
Before her White House appointment, Zacharia served as general counsel for Fix California from 2024 to 2025 and held advisory roles at the Department of Homeland Security and Trump Media.
