Lisa Cook’s lawyers call Trump’s investigation committee ‘demonstrably biased’
Lisa Cook’s lawyers say the panel lacks objectivity and note she cannot attend a Nov. 5 hearing because of Fed duties in Europe.
On Tuesday, lawyers for Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook challenged a White House committee of inquiry, labeling the panel "demonstrably biased" in a letter to counsel William Scharf.
The White House established the committee last Friday to investigate accusations against Cook, aiming to determine whether there is "cause" to fire her from the board.
Lawyer Abbe Lowell noted all three committee members are Trump appointees, including economic adviser Kevin Hassett, Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling, and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Andrea Rich, raising independence concerns.
Cook will not participate in a November 5 hearing because she "will be executing her official duties as Governor" at financial and monetary policy meetings in Europe, Lowell said.
President Donald Trump previously attempted to fire Cook in August 2025, but the Supreme Court ruled she could remain in her position while litigation continues. No president has fired a Fed governor before.
