Where Americans Earn the Most From Investments
- SmartAsset analyzed 2022 IRS tax return data to rank 3,022 U.S. counties and all states according to their reported average net capital gains.
- This ranking is based on the most recent IRS figures, as profits from asset sales—known as capital gains—are important indicators of investment performance and benefit from reduced tax rates when the assets are held for at least one year.
- Teton County, Wyoming had the largest mean capital gain amount reported by taxpayers, averaging $515,267 each, while among states, Florida recorded the highest average capital gains at $84,911 per filer.
- Florida reported gains totaling $181.4 billion from 2,136,380 returns, with substantial contributions coming from areas such as Palm Beach County, which accounted for $40.4 billion, and Miami-Dade County, which added $37.4 billion.
- High net capital gains can indicate affluent populations and robust markets, which potentially stimulate local economies through increased tax revenues and spending.
