WhatsApp Web Starts Rolling Out Voice and Video Calls
WhatsApp Web beta users can now make encrypted one-on-one voice and video calls with screen sharing; group calls on web are still being developed, WABetaInfo reported.
WhatsApp is beginning to deploy voice and video calling in web browsers, starting to reach WhatsApp Web beta users with a staged release.
After about a year of development, WhatsApp refined web calling to match official desktop apps and WABetaInfo reported a few weeks ago that Meta planned group calls for WhatsApp Web.
Users can start calls from individual chats by using voice and video buttons; web calls support screen sharing and remain end-to-end encrypted using Signal protocol on Linux.
The rollout lets users place voice and video calls from the browser without installing the desktop app, but WhatsApp and outlets note calls are still under development, so stability may vary.
With a wider rollout expected in the coming weeks, WhatsApp plans to expand the WhatsApp Web beta program to support group calls with up to 32 participants, call links, and scheduled calls.
