WhatsApp Rolls Out New Feature that Flags Potential Scam Messages
The feature runs locally on users’ devices and warns about impersonation and AI-generated scams without sending message content to Meta.
- Meta is previewing "Scam Alert," a new WhatsApp feature using on-device machine learning to detect and stop scams without sending message data to servers or Meta.
- Criminals are increasingly posing as hotels on WhatsApp, using accurate reservation details including genuine booking numbers to win victim trust. Spain's National Cybersecurity Institute warned the scam is catching travelers this summer.
- If users activate the system, it downloads a machine-learning model to scan incoming messages from non-contacts. WhatsApp says it needs "Telemetry" to ensure Scam Alert works properly, collecting only anonymized warning frequency counts.
- Upon detecting a likely scam, users see a private warning visible only to them, with options to block the sender or continue. WhatsApp is stress-testing the system through a limited beta in select regions.
- INCIBE-CERT has documented more than 4,000 customers whose full details were compromised, with around 300 cases involving fraudulent card charges. The institute warns that even Meta's "Verified business account" badge is no guarantee of legitimacy.
