WhatsApp Is Adding Usernames to Keep Your Phone Number Private

The feature lets users share contact details without exposing phone numbers, and usernames must follow strict rules across Meta platforms.

  • WhatsApp has officially begun a phased rollout of its long-awaited username feature, allowing users to share contact details without revealing their telephone numbers. The feature is entering what many are calling its "final stretch."
  • After years of speculation and testing, Meta subsidiary WhatsApp launched this feature to select users. Developers prioritized application stability throughout the long development period for the new identifier system.
  • Usernames must be between 3 and 30 characters long, containing only lowercase letters, numbers, periods, and underscores. Each identifier must include at least one letter and cannot start with "www." or end with domain extensions.
  • Via the Settings menu, users can choose unique names or link existing Facebook or Instagram profiles. Meta requires usernames remain unclaimed across its platforms to ensure account consistency across all services.
  • Along with the username, users can set up a four-digit code to filter new contact requests. This security measure helps individuals limit interactions to trusted parties while maintaining privacy.
