It has been claimed that Olympique Marseille, Beşiktaş's opponent in the UEFA Europa League, is considering withdrawing from the tournament following financial penalties imposed by UEFA. While the French club's management decided to continue in the Europa League after discussions, the club was fined a total of 10 million euros and given a conditional ban from European competitions.

The Olympique Marseille also considered an extreme solution to deal with a season made particularly complicated by financial difficulties: giving up the Europa League.
