What the world can learn from Uruguay as the global housing crisis deepens
More than 1.8 billion people worldwide lack access to adequate and affordable housing.
Uruguay is an exception to the global housing crisis due to its unique cooperative housing model that began in the 1960s and was legally recognized in 1968.
Uruguay currently has 2,197 housing cooperatives that provide homes to about 5% of the country's households.
This includes initiatives like MUJEFA, which focus on housing designed and governed with women's unique needs in mind.
