Paul McGinley Critical of Bryson DeChambeau’s ‘Silliness’ After Open Threat
R&A officials said the penalty changed his score and pairings, but DeChambeau later said he will play the final two rounds.
- On Friday, LIV Golf star Bryson DeChambeau received a two-stroke penalty at the Open Championship in Southport, England, after officials determined he improperly improved "the area of his intended swing" on a shot 13 holes earlier.
- Open organizers' executive director Grant Moir explained the penalty applied to improving swing conditions during the fifth hole, stressing the rule applies even when the action is accidental, as it was in DeChambeau's case.
- The penalty changed his score from 4-under 66 to a triple-bogey 7, dropping DeChambeau three shots behind leader Lucas Herbert entering the weekend instead of one shot back.
- Agent Brett Falkoff claimed DeChambeau was "100 percent" serious when he threatened to withdraw, but the golfer later confirmed via social media at 12:02 a.m. local time that he would play Saturday.
- DeChambeau previously missed the cut at the Masters, the PGA Championship, and the Open, making this his first weekend appearance at a major championship this year despite the penalty setback.
