In the early morning of September 16, 1810, Miguel Hidalgo gathered the people in Dolores to issue an urgent call against Spanish rule. Although no exact record exists, it is believed he exclaimed phrases such as "Long live the Virgin of Guadalupe!" and "Death to bad government, death to the gachupines!" With those words, he lit the spark that would spark Mexican independence.
