Andy Burnham Promises to Devolve More Power in 'Pitch to Scotland'
He is expected to set out devolution plans and a message on Scotland as Labour seeks to rebuild support after poor election results.
On Monday, Labour MP Andy Burnham outlined his vision for a "Number 10 North" in Manchester, pledging to "rewire the British state" by redistributing power from Whitehall to regions and nations.
Burnham argued growth must be "nurtured from the bottom up" rather than directed from London, pledging the outpost would "power up all parts of the country" through regional devolution.
SNP Westminster leader Dave Doogan claimed the proposals offered "nothing of substance" for Scotland, accusing Burnham of making "empty promises" while maintaining Westminster's "austerity cuts and Brexit" policies.
Scottish Greens spokesperson Kristopher Leask MSP argued the speech was "big on rhetoric but short on policy," while Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay demanded Burnham "flesh out what new powers" he's proposing.
As the likely successor to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Burnham faces pressure to clarify whether he will grant Scotland energy powers and autonomy over its future, questions his speech left unanswered.
