WestJet ordered to scrap weight cap on power wheelchairs
The regulator said the limit creates an undue barrier and ordered WestJet to use spreader plates or offer alternative travel until then.
Canada's transport regulator says WestJet is creating an undue barrier by barring some power wheelchairs from its planes due to a weight cap on mobility aids.
WestJet must remove its 300-pound weight cap on power wheelchairs on most aircraft before July 2027, according to the Canadian Transportation Agency.
The regulator recommends using spreader plates to distribute wheelchair weight and suggests arranging travel with other airlines until the cap is removed.
Winnipeg resident Steven Fletcher brought the case after being stopped from flying with his custom wheelchair, calling the cap discriminatory and limiting travel for disabled Canadians.
