Carney and Trump speak ahead of 50% US tariff deadline
The leaders discussed a last-minute deal as new 50% tariffs on about $20 billion in imports approach a Wednesday midnight deadline, officials said.
Canadian and American negotiators plan to meet on Tuesday to try to avoid new U.S. tariffs on $30 billion of Canadian goods set to begin after midnight.
U.S. President Trump has threatened to impose 50% tariffs on many Canadian products in response to Canada's tariffs on some U.S. goods, which followed the start of a trade war last year.
If no agreement is reached, the tariffs will start Wednesday, affecting Canadian liquor, hockey equipment, wood, paper, and other industries.
Prime Minister Mark Carney described the tariff negotiations as 'delicate' and 'intense' and planned to speak with President Trump within 48 hours; the two spoke Monday and are scheduled to speak again Tuesday.
