West Fraser Reduces OSB Capacity
West Fraser will take a US$200 million charge due to the OSB mill curtailment caused by weakening demand and supply imbalances from tariffs and lower housing affordability.
- On Dec. 4, 2025, West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. announced it will indefinitely curtail its High Level, Alberta OSB mill in the spring of 2026, affecting approximately 190 employees whom the company will try to relocate.
- The company says the decision stems from weakened oriented strand board demand, and CEO Sean McLaren said lower housing affordability and Canadian softwood lumber tariffs created imbalances.
- The move cuts 860 million square feet of OSB capacity, and one Cordele, Georgia OSB production line off-line since late 2023 will remain indefinitely idled.
- Recording the reductions, West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. expects to take an approximately $200 million asset impairment loss in the fourth quarter of 2025 and reported a US$204 million net loss in the third quarter.
- Amid wider industry cutbacks, last month West Fraser announced it would close the 100 Mile House lumber mill by 2025, while a Vancouver Island pulp mill closure affects around 350 employees.
