West Brom's Aune Heggebo Slapped with Two-Match Ban After Failed Appeal Against FA Charge for Norwich Handball Goal
The Football Association upheld a rule E3.1 charge after Albion’s appeal, leaving Heggebo out of two upcoming matches.
Following an appeal hearing on Thursday, Aune Heggebo faces a two-match suspension for "successful deception of a match official" after his controversial handball goal during last Saturday's 2-1 victory over Norwich.
Officials charged the forward under Rule E3.1, alleging he "successfully deceive a match official by handling the ball in a direct successful attempt to score a goal" during the 75th minute at Carrow Road.
West Brom appealed the charge, arguing the ball struck Heggebo's hand accidentally after a deflection off goalkeeper Vladan Kovacevic, leaving the striker with less than 0.1 of a second to react.
The forward will now miss Sunday's match against Burnley and next Wednesday's Carabao Cup fixture at Newcastle. Albion remains "steadfast in their support of Aune," and plans to write to the governing body requesting future clarification.
West Brom stated the charge is believed to be "the first of its kind in English football," stemming from a regulatory change prior to the 2024-25 season. This decision sets a precedent for handball enforcement.
