Huge ‘Hobbit’-themed eagle sculptures to depart New Zealand airport
- Two massive eagle sculptures, each weighing 1.2 tonnes and featuring a 15-meter wingspan, are set to leave Wellington Airport on Friday.
- The sculptures were created by Wētā Workshop in 2013 to coincide with The Hobbit movie trilogy, and one features a sculpture of Gandalf riding it.
- One eagle fell during a 2014 earthquake due to underestimated weight, prompting a WorkSafe investigation, but no injuries occurred.
- Matt Clarke, head of Wellington Airport, mentioned that they are collaborating with Wētā Workshop to develop a distinctive replacement inspired by local themes, which is set to be announced before the end of the year.
- The eagles will be dismantled, stored, and removed to make way for the new exhibit, while a Smaug sculpture remains at the airport.
