Well-rested Dallas Stars hope long offseason sets them up to make another deep playoff run
The extended break helped several key players recover from injuries and gave the team more time to prepare for another playoff push.
The Dallas Stars host their season opener Friday night against St. Louis, ending their longest gap in five years at 155 days following first-round playoff elimination.
General Manager Jim Nill described the extended downtime as "a big break for the guys," allowing recovery from intense playoff hockey and physical wear and tear before the regular season.
Tyler Seguin, nearing the end of his $78.8 million eight-year contract, rejoined healthy teammates including top center Roope Hintz. Meanwhile, 23-year-old center Wyatt Johnston, who played all 390 Stars games since his debut, looks stronger after the extended summer.
Second-Year coach Glen Gulutzan praised captain Jamie Benn, saying he trained "like crazy" and is "really lean," while Benn noted the game is getting faster and he's "just trying to keep up."
The October 2 opener marks the earliest season start for the Stars since October 1, 1999, when they raised the Stanley Cup banner. Dallas enters positioned for a full regular season without pandemic-era scheduling constraints.
