Weight Loss Medications Show Promise in Preventing Obesity-Related Cancers
The drugs were tied to a 41% lower overall risk, with the strongest reduction seen in tirzepatide users, researchers said.
- On Monday, a study published in the Annals of Oncology found GLP-1 receptor agonists are associated with a 41% lower risk of obesity-related cancers in obese, non-diabetic adults.
- Researchers analyzed records from 229,467 obese, non-diabetic patients using the TriNetX database, comparing GLP-1 RAs users against individuals receiving only diet and exercise counseling over a two-year follow-up period.
- Protective effects were even more pronounced in specific subgroups: men experienced a nearly 70% risk reduction, while women saw a 58% decline in endometrial cancer incidence, a malignancy closely linked to obesity.
- Dr. Aparna Kamat, director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at Houston Methodist Hospital, said the results "may reach further and transform how we think about cancer prevention."
- Experts caution that these findings do not prove causation and require long-term clinical trials to establish clear anti-cancer benefits before these medications become a standard preventive strategy.
