Amber cold health alert now issued for parts of UK until Saturday
Amber alert covers northern England as temperatures fall to -10C, raising risks for vulnerable groups and increasing pressure on health and social care services, UKHSA warns.
- On Monday, November 17, the UK Health Security Agency issued amber alerts for the North East, North West and Yorkshire and the Humber and a yellow alert for the rest of England until Saturday, November 22, warning significant impacts on health and social care services.
- Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Dan Holley said, "As Storm Claudia retreats to the south, high pressure to the North West will drive a cold northerly flow from the Arctic across the UK," with Wednesday to Friday the coldest, reaching minus 10C overnight.
- Wintry snow showers are expected to extend south through Wednesday and into Thursday, mainly affecting north-facing coastal areas, with 2-5cm possible in low-lying areas in the north and east and 5-10cm on hills in Northern Ireland, northeast England and Scotland.
- Health bodies warn the cold will strain services as UKHSA said people aged 65 years and over may face higher death risks and hospitals, care homes and clinics struggle to keep indoor temperatures at least 18 degrees.
- People should keep an eye on the forecast in their area as updates to warnings are possible; conditions are expected to be drier and milder from Friday with rain reaching the west, UKHSA said.
