Weather, time of day factors in probe of deadly Wainwright military base fire
Officials said the cause remains under investigation as false claims spread online, while the military reviews safety procedures after the training-ground blaze.
On Saturday, Oct. 17, a fire at the Canadian Armed Forces training ground in Wainwright, Alta., killed four soldiers and injured dozens during a live-fire exercise on an anti-grenade launcher range.
Military officials said a strong afternoon wind rapidly pushed flames beyond the monitored grenade range, bypassing fireguards and reaching soldiers conducting attack training in an adjacent area.
The military identified Sgt. Morgan Wong of Edmonton among the four soldiers killed, while 27 injured soldiers remain hospitalized, with 13 in critical condition and 12 released.
Vanessa Hanrahan, head of the military police, said 30 police are investigating on the ground, though information they can confirm remains limited as probes examine weather, dryness, and munitions.
Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Jennie Carignan promised the military will implement safety measures immediately if investigators find them necessary, emphasizing the need to prevent future tragedies.
