Family of Prince Albert soldier killed in CFB Wainwright fire remembers him as a dreamer
The family is finalizing funeral arrangements with full military honours, and 27 injured soldiers remain in hospital, officials said.
The family of Shaun Farrell is finalizing funeral arrangements with the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry following his death in an Oct. 17 grass fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta. A service with full military honours is planned.
Farrell was one of four soldiers killed when a fast-moving grass fire overtook troops during routine training exercises. Officials said the blaze originated on a grenade launcher range before violent winds pushed flames toward the soldiers.
Speaking at the Prince Albert Armoury, close friend Andre Grobler described Farrell as possessing a "quiet, bulldog-like tenacity" and said serving in the military was his "true calling, his dream, and his ultimate purpose."
Officials reported Thursday that 27 injured soldiers remain hospitalized, including 13 in critical condition. Grobler said Farrell was expected to begin his journey home within the next 24 hours.
Canadian Forces Provost Marshal Brig.-Gen. Vanessa Hanrahan said investigations are ongoing with no evidence of criminal cause. Prince Albert residents may leave condolences at City Hall on Central Avenue during office hours Monday to Friday.
