NI Secretary Ban on Drumcree March Lawful, Court Rules
The court said the ban was lawful after police warned they could not safely escort the parade past crowds opposing its return.
On Wednesday, the Belfast High Court dismissed a legal challenge to the ban on the Drumcree Orange Parade, with Judge David Scoffield ruling Northern Ireland Secretary Sir Chris Bryant acted lawfully in blocking the contentious route.
Sir Chris stepped in on October 9 after a 13-day standoff in Portadown, following police advice that the march posed an "unacceptable risk of serious injury, disorder and a wider contagion effect."
Breandan Mac Cionnaith of the Garvaghy Road Residents Coalition said the community feels "fully vindicated" by the ruling, while Sinn Féin councillor for Craigavon Catherine Nelson added they "can now live in peace again."
Loyalist activist Jamie Bryson, advisor to the Portadown District of the Orange Order, insisted the organization "will walk the Garvaghy Road" and indicated counsel would likely lodge an appeal against the ruling.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin urged leaders to "strengthen and develop" community relationships, as persistent political tensions remain with Sinn Féin representatives under police investigation for their role in blocking the march.
