Commission Wrong to Allow Drumcree Parade, According to Poll
More In Common found 53% back Chris Bryant’s intervention, while Protestants remain split over the Orange Order parade dispute.
A report published Wednesday by research agency More In Common found that 53% of people in Northern Ireland believe the British government was right to ban the controversial Orange Order march at Drumcree.
Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Bryant revoked permission for the parade on October 9 following a two-week stand-off between Portadown Orangemen and Garvaghy Road residents, citing an 'unacceptable risk of serious injury' and disorder.
A large majority—82%—stated it matters that the dispute ends without violence, while voters across all parties agreed the only acceptable ending is that the Orange Lodge's 'right to parade is confirmed, but it chooses not to use it.'
Sinn Féin support increased to 30% in October from 25% in July, making the party the primary political beneficiary, while the DUP remained steady at 18%.
While 49% of respondents oppose a Stormont Executive collapse over the dispute, 72% of Traditional Unionist Voice voters would support such a walkout, revealing deep unionist divisions.
