Bars And Liquor Stores In Boston Ran Out Of Beer After Scottish Soccer Fans Invaded The City For The World Cup
Bars and liquor stores rushed to restock after Scottish fans drained beer, seltzers and other drinks ahead of World Cup matches.
Over the weekend, visiting Scottish World Cup fans descended on Boston, emptying bars and liquor stores of beer, seltzers, and other inventory as businesses reported unprecedented demand.
Hennessy's Bar and Federal Wine & Spirits were among many businesses caught off guard by the World Cup's ballooning alcohol demand, prompting operators to order extra beer and stock additional refrigerators.
Federal Wine & Spirits in the Financial District sold out of Budweiser and Corona, while McBride's co-owner Jennifer Monastesse noted the pub grossed $2,000 more than average on Friday despite being short-staffed.
Noelle Somers, chief operating officer at Hennessy's, said, "We've been here for over 30 years, and we've never seen anything like it," noting Scottish patrons gave generous tips and "brought fun back that was lost."
Hennessy's has scheduled new deliveries for Thursday to prepare for the next weekend of soccer matches, as English fans will descend on Boston to watch their team's matchup against Ghana next Tuesday.
