Waymo Eyes Toronto Launch in 2028
The company will start mapping and driver-supervised test runs this fall as it prepares to expand its autonomous ride-hailing service beyond the United States.
On Friday, Google subsidiary Waymo announced plans to launch autonomous ride-hailing services in Toronto by 2028, receiving Ontario government approval to begin high-definition mapping and test runs this fall.
For its Canadian debut, Waymo is partnering with Toronto-based Element Fleet Management to handle maintenance, customer service, and support functions across the operation.
Waymo's white SUVs will not be the first autonomous vehicles on Toronto streets; California-based Gatik began a rollout of 50 autonomous box trucks for Loblaw in the city last year.
Waymo plans to create hundreds of jobs in fleet maintenance and validation driving, while CEO Tekedra Mawakana stated the company is committed to "safer streets and more accessible mobility."
Testing utilizes the Waymo Ojai, a Chinese-made electric vehicle manufactured by Zeekr, as the company prepares for future deployment of the Waymo Driver on city streets.
