CNN, Axios and other publishers join Google's AI news program

The program now includes more than 400 publications globally as Google pays publishers for enhanced content rights and tests AI summaries with attribution.

  • On Thursday, Skydance's CNN announced a multiyear partnership with Google to explore how generative AI can drive audience engagement across the network. The agreement grants Google enhanced content rights for experimental features, though financial terms remain undisclosed.
  • Amid declining referral traffic from search engines, publishers seek compensation for AI content use. Chartbeat data previously reported by TheWrap shows Google Search pageviews to publishers fell 34% year over year.
  • Sam Felix, CNN's senior vice president of strategic partnerships and business development, said "Google's innovation with generative AI has changed how people discover information." The network aims to pursue commercial AI partnerships while safeguarding its intellectual property.
  • Google has partnered with more than 3,000 publications across more than 50 countries, including deals covering expanded display rights. The company previously launched a News AI pilot in December 2025, testing article summaries and audio briefings in Google News.
  • On October 1, a federal judge dismissed a Penske Media lawsuit challenging Google's use of articles in AI-generated search summaries, though the decision allows the publisher to refile. Publishers continue facing legal challenges regarding AI content use.
