Watertown Band Students Invited to Perform Banned Piece at Madison Beer Garden
On May 12, the Watertown School Board voted 7-1 to remove 'A Mother of a Revolution!' from the high school spring concert, leaving the piece off the program during Monday's performance.
Citing a 'controversial issues' policy, board members argued the piece—which commemorates the 1969 Stonewall uprising—promotes 'celebration of violence' and violates the district's commitment to 'values-neutral education.'
More than 100 people rallied outside the May 18 concert to support student musicians, with parent Tracy Nass stating, 'For it to just be the thing that's become this politically motivated is not something I appreciate.'
Composer Omar Thomas will conduct a free public performance Wednesday at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, while Minocqua Brewing Company owner Kirk Bangstad hosts a sold-out event Saturday in Madison.
The school board stands by its decision, while organizers of the alternative performances emphasize these events are not associated with the Watertown Unified School District.
