Washington high court: State will strip gun rights after two DUIs
The Washington State Supreme Court ruled that individuals convicted of two DUIs within seven years will lose their Second Amendment rights under a 2023 state law.
Those affected cannot own or possess firearms until filing a petition after five consecutive years of good behavior in the community.
Justice Steven González wrote that this ban aligns with America's historical firearm regulations as recognized by the U.S. Supreme Court's Bruen decision and allows temporary disarming after two DUIs to prevent violence.
Justice G. Helen Whitener dissented, warning the majority relied on speculative statistics to restrict fundamental freedoms.
