Thousands Join Anti-Immigration Marches Around Poland

POLAND, JUL 19 – Far-right party Konfederacja led protests demanding stricter border controls and deportations amid government efforts that cut special protection approvals by 40%, officials said.

  • In Warsaw, police intervened after anti-immigrant protesters and counter-protesters clashed during Stop Immigration marches.
  • Euronews reported that anti-immigration protests organized by the Confederation Liberty and Independence party took place in more than 80 cities across Poland, including in Warsaw, Krakow, Poznan, Wroclaw, and Bialystok, after military border deployments earlier this month.
  • In Katowice, around 3,000 attended the largest rally, TVP reported, while Maria Książak said `Everyone, regardless of their skin colour and origin, should feel comfortable not only in Poland, but also in Europe` and United Against Racism declared `It’s fascism that is the crime, not migration`.
  • Both marches were halted until 14:00 with no serious injuries, and video showed Katarzyna Augustynek, known as Babcia Kasia, being carried away by police.
  • On Friday, interior ministers from six EU countries agreed on tightening asylum rules, and the Polish parliament suspended asylum applications for those entering from Belarus.
