Warriors playmaker set to move on after losing battle for No 7 jersey
The playmaker can negotiate with rivals from 2027 after losing the starting halfback role to Tanah Boyd, the club said.
New Zealand Warriors granted playmaker Luke Metcalf permission to negotiate with other NRL clubs regarding his playing future from 2027 onward. The decision follows Metcalf requesting clarity on his role with the club.
The Warriors' decision follows halfback Tanah Boyd securing a contract extension through 2029, with Boyd's strong form delivering seven wins in nine games and shifting the club's long-term spine strategy.
Despite signing a rich extension last year through 2028, Metcalf has struggled to crack the starting team recently and currently serves on the six-man bench behind Boyd and Chanel Harris-Tavita.
Several clubs including the Dragons and Bulldogs are expected to monitor the situation, while expansion teams Perth and PNG may show interest due to the lack of elite playmakers available over the coming 12 months.
One New Zealand Warriors CEO Cameron George stated the club will not provide further comment until updates arrive from Metcalf. The team faces the Brisbane Broncos on Sunday at Suncorp Stadium.
