Parents Warned Third of Sunglasses Sold on Sites Like Amazon and Ebay 'Unsafe'
Researchers from Which? purchased twenty pairs of children's sunglasses from online platforms such as Amazon, eBay, AliExpress, and Temu, discovering that many models offered inadequate or inconsistent UV protection.
The investigation found one third of the sunglasses lacked adequate UV protection, with two pairs showing dangerously low levels despite claiming full protection.
All tested sunglasses missed mandatory UK safety markings such as CE or UKCA, and many made misleading UV blocking claims or had inconsistent filtering.
Marketplaces including eBay, Amazon, AliExpress, Temu, Shein, and TikTok removed unsafe listings and stated they prioritize product safety with active monitoring and compliance measures.
Which? director Rocio Concha urged the Government to strengthen the Product Regulation and Metrology Bill by imposing legal duties and heavy fines on marketplaces to ensure product safety.
