Lithuania Asks NATO to Bolster Air Defenses After Cross-Border Drone Incursions
LITHUANIA, AUG 5 – Lithuania detected a Russian drone carrying two kilograms of explosives and requested NATO to enhance air defences amid growing regional security threats, officials said.
- Amid escalating drone incursions, Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys and Defence Minister Dovile Sakaliene asked NATO chief Mark Rutte for immediate measures to enhance air defence in Lithuania.
- On July 28 the Russian military drone flew in from Belarus, was spotted over Vilnius, and was found in a military training area on August 1, with its explosive device neutralised by Lithuanian specialists.
- Officials believe the intruder was a Russian-made Gerbera drone, marking the second such incident recently, and similar violations have been reported by other NATO allies.
