Walmart Says It Will Use Billions in Tariff Refunds to Keep Prices Low
The retailer said it will channel the refund into rollbacks across food and general merchandise as it seeks to protect customer demand.
On Thursday, Walmart Chief Financial Officer John David Rainey announced the retailer will use its $2.9 billion tariff refund to fund price cuts across food, general merchandise, consumables, and fashion.
The refund follows a February Supreme Court ruling that declared President Donald Trump's International Emergency Economic Powers Act tariffs illegal, prompting the government to issue repayments from the $168 billion collected from 330,000 importers.
Unlike Walmart, major retailers Target, Home Depot, and TJX did not commit to lowering consumer prices, instead using tariff refunds to reduce cost of sales and boost gross profits.
Walmart reported its slowest quarterly sales growth in six years as high fuel prices constrain consumer spending; CFO Rainey noted that when gas prices exceed $4, shoppers make difficult purchasing choices.
Data from the AP-NORC Center reveals growing consumer concerns about compounding price pressures on housing, healthcare, and groceries, while retail analyst Saunders of GlobalData said price cuts will likely focus on essentials rather than returning to 2019 levels.
