Walmart Says Tap to Pay Coming to All Stores by Year’s End
The retailer says the change gives shoppers more payment choices as tap-to-pay rolls out to select stores and clubs, with fuel stations coming later.
- On Friday, Walmart announced it will begin accepting Apple Pay and Google Pay at stores and Sam's Club locations starting August 24, bringing widely used contactless payment options to the retailer for the first time.
- Previously, the retailer resisted NFC-based payments, instead promoting its own proprietary solutions like Walmart Pay and Scan-and-Go, following years of customer requests and the failed CurrentC payment system launched in 2016.
- Younger consumers expect tap-to-pay functionality, which is now accepted at 85% of U.S. retailers, Emarketer principal retail analyst Sky Canaves noted, after YouTuber MrBeast highlighted the issue when it went viral last year.
- All Walmart and Sam's Club stores will offer contactless payments by the end of the year, with fuel stations following by mid-2027; the company confirmed that existing Walmart Pay options will remain available.
- Expanding payment choices is part of a broader effort to make everyday shopping easier, the company said, allowing customers to use any eligible contactless card, phone, or smartwatch at checkout counters across the United States.
