Monster Storm Plunges 30,000 Homes Into Darkness
Western Power said more than 7,000 homes lost electricity as the Bureau of Meteorology warned damaging winds could persist into Monday.
On Sunday, an intense low-pressure system lashed Western Australia with wind gusts up to 125km/h, plunging 30,000 homes into darkness across Perth and the South West.
The Bureau of Meteorology advised this rare weather event occurs only once every five years, with Meteorologist Joey Rawson warning wind gusts would intensify rather than ease as evening approached.
Western Power reported widespread outages affecting more than 2,000 homes in Langford, Lynwood and Ferndale, while the Department of Fire and Emergency Services received 120 calls for fallen trees, roof damage and water ingress.
High tides submerged the iconic Blue Boat Shed on Swan River, and organisers Celebrate WA cancelled public festivals, stating "strong winds are making it impossible to safely bump in the event."
Police hailed "great news" after an 11-year-old boy missing overnight was found safe in Perth's western suburbs, while the system moves east toward southeastern Western Australia on Monday.
